What’s on and when at York Christmas Market 2024?
York Christmas market runs from the 14th November – 22nd December 2024
St Nicholas Fair used to be just the last weekend in November but over recent years it has expanded to be the whole of the Christmas period which is fabulous for York and makes it a real destination over Christmas.
Of course there are lots of other festive events going on over Christmas that you must check out too and plan all your festive fun!
If you are not from York and are looking for somewhere to stay while you are here, have a look at some of the hotels perfectly placed to visit York Christmas Market or have a look at some of the Yorkshire Hotels we have reviewed for a fab festive break!
Festively decorated alpine chalets will be spread across Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, offering a range of unique gifts, seasonal food and drinks and local produce.
THOR’S tipi is back in the Museum Gardens as well as in the gardens of the Principal York. Serving traditional ‘Winter Warmers,’ such as mulled wine & luxury hot chocolate, with delicious feasts by Yuzu Street Food – all in a twinkly, Christmas style tipi with real log fire.
The rustic Yorkshire Barn in St Sampson’s Square will warm up guests with festive food and drink, from hot chestnuts to mulled wine and King’s Square will host the much-loved Vintage Carousel throughout the festive season.

Christmas Market York
The York Xmas Market is usually mainly on Parliament Street, but you can also find cabins in St Sampson’s Square and a indoor market in the Guildhall.
Housed in these cute little wooden cabins, you can buy all manner of Christmas gifts. My favourite are the ones selling pretty interiors products, wall art prints and Christmas decorations.
Parliament Street, where the York Christmas Market is, is lined with trees that are festooned with tiny twinkling Christmas lights. Seasonal smells fill the air from spicy curries to the sharp tang of frying onions, it’s very difficult to choose from the myriad of food choices.
I also like to indulge in a hot chocolate and crepes or waffles.

How to best navigate York Christmas Market
My advice is to begin your browsing at the end of the market nearest Piccadilly then gradually work your way up towards St Sampson’s Square, where there is often food stalls.
The Christmas lights will then lead you away from the market and up Davygate towards St Helen’s Square where there is a huge Christmas Tree outside the Mansion House – the address of the Lord Mayor of York. Here you could treat yourself to a coffee in The Ivy or some goodies from Betty’s.
If you have the children with you don’t miss Santa’s Grotto in Coppergate (near the Jorvik Viking Centre), it’s run by the Christmas experts Stockeld Park.
