We are always keen to try new family friendly restaurants in York so were really pleased to be invited to dine at 88 Walmgate.
Atmosphere
It’s a bright, modern restaurant, and was a lovely snug haven on a dark, wet January evening.
It was early in the evening and the restaurant was yet to get busy so we were given our choice of tables, which I always like. We chose to sit next to the fire (which isn’t real – gah – but makes for a cosy atmosphere).

Child Friendliness
Our server was lovely and chatted to our children, making them feel welcome. She also brought the children’s menu for them. On the back on the menu is a colouring sheet – pens and pencils also provided.

Miss H loved colouring it in (a nice change from hunting Pokemon!).

Main Course
We decided to go for a main and pudding. Mr Wonders chose the Wagyu Burger (he praised it very highly and this is a man who likes his burgers!).

I chose the 8oz Rib Eye steak, cooked to medium. It was beautifully cooked (I often get my steak overcooked) and very tasty. Loved the chunky chips too.

Master T followed his Dad and ordered a kids’ burger with extra cheese and bacon – look at the size of it!

Miss H plumped for kids’ fish and chips. All the dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty!

Dessert Course
The dessert course was eagerly anticipated by Master T who ordered the 88 Freakshake – it was huge and he didn’t manage to finish it. (I’d recommend sharing this one!).

Miss H chose a bowlful of strawberries which is her all time favourite dessert, so she was happy.

I had the Dark Chocolate Mousse (still very slightly frozen in the middle but lovely nevertheless).

Mr Wonders went for the Vanilla Bean Cheesecake which he really enjoyed.

Location and Parking – 88 Walmgate
All in all a great visit to 88 Walmgate and a fab place to take the kids for lunch or a treat tea. We parked opposite the restaurant at £2 for the evening parking, it was very easy, and easy is good when you have kids in tow. A great alternative to one of the out of town big chain restaurants. Real food with a convenient location.
