I started by meeting an old friend — one of those people you might not see for ages, but instantly fall back into easy conversation with. There’s a special kind of joy in that, isn’t there? We chose to make an occasion of it, settling in for afternoon tea first. Think neatly cut sandwiches, warm scones piled high with jam and cream, and far too many cakes to reasonably justify… but we managed. Of course we did.

From there, things took a slightly more indulgent turn as we moved on to cocktails. It felt delightfully grown-up and just a little bit decadent, chatting away over clinking glasses and reminiscing before the main event. By the time we made our way to the theatre, spirits were high and expectations even higher.

And then — Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre.
From the moment the curtain rose, it had that unmistakable, comforting charm. Oliver! is one of those musicals that feels woven into the fabric of British theatre, and this production leaned into that beautifully. The set design transported us straight into Dickensian London, all cobbled streets and shadowy alleyways, while the costumes were rich with character and detail.
The performances were full of energy and warmth. Fagin was wonderfully animated, toeing that line between mischief and menace, while the Artful Dodger had exactly the right cheeky swagger. And Oliver himself? Sweet, hopeful, and entirely endearing — just as he should be.
Of course, it’s the songs that really carry the show, and they didn’t disappoint. There’s something magical about hearing familiar numbers like “Food, Glorious Food” and “Consider Yourself” performed live — it’s almost impossible not to smile. By the time “Oom-Pah-Pah” rolled around, the whole audience seemed completely swept up in it.

What really stood out, though, was how the production balanced the light and the dark. It never shied away from the grittier edges of the story, but there was always that thread of hope running through it — a reminder of why this tale has endured for so long.
By the end of the evening, we left the theatre feeling thoroughly entertained and just a little bit nostalgic. It was one of those days that ticks all the boxes: good food, great company, and a show that leaves you humming all the way home.
If you’re looking for a feel-good outing with a touch of classic theatre magic, Oliver! is a wonderful choice — especially if you can turn it into a full afternoon and evening like we did. Highly recommended.
