Seeing in the new year often means also seeing in lots of changes to your life. We all make resolutions of some kind, whether they’re professional or personal, and we strive to keep them as the months go on.
But this new year coming, why not make a promise to make your home more energy efficient? In doing so, you can help the environment, lower your own carbon footprint, and even save a load on your yearly energy bill – and we all know just how high those are rising right now!
With all that in mind, here are 3 ways you can invest in energy efficiency once the new year rolls round.
Investigate for Gaps in Your Insulation
A cosy home is a well sealed one! So go round now and see if you’ve got any draughts occurring. Investigate the windows and doors, from the top of their frames to the bottom, and see if there’s a flow going in or out. You’ll very easily be able to feel if this is the case.
If you find a gap, it’s time to fill it. Sometimes this is a simple matter of getting some caulk out and filling a hole, sometimes it’s more to do with the way the window or door has been fitted or hung. You may also need to get some deeper cavity insulation work done, but that’s something to figure out after you’ve discovered your draught sources.
Upgrade Your Boiler
The boiler in your home is usually where all your heat comes from, whether that gets pushed out in the water or from the radiators. It’s an integral bit of kit in the construction of a house, and that’s why it’s so crucial to double check how well your boiler is working year by year.
Indeed, it might be well after the right time for an upgrade! Getting a new boiler fitted could make your heating bills drop from simple effective function alone. After all, if an old or non-combi boiler is in charge of your central heating, there could be a big problem in its effectiveness.
You could also upgrade to an air source heat pump, which uses renewable energy to heat a home. That’ll make it a lot cheaper to heat your rooms month by month, and you won’t have to worry about pushing emissions into the air during winter when you’ve got the heating turned on all season long!
See if You Need Better Appliances
Better appliances usually mean more energy efficient ones, but be careful when you’re shopping around for a new dishwasher or fridge.
You want to be sure they’ve got the sticker of approval – and you can very easily check for one whether you’re shopping online or in person. Try to get as near to that A rating as you can, even if it means spending a bit more than you’re really comfortable with.
