It’s many years since I have visited the Canary Islands so was thrilled at the opportunity to review a couple of hotels in Lanzarote. This is a review of Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa.
We also spent two nights at The Grand Hyatt (formerly known as Dreams) first and you can see that review here.
We stayed in the Preferred Club Swim-Up Suite and have reviewed that in full too (lots of lovely pictures!), as well as the spa. If you prefer a video review, have a look at mine below.

Reception and Piano Bar at Secrets Lanzarote
The lobby at Secrets Lanzarote is large and spacious and creates an excellent first impression to the hotel with lots of comfortable seating, sofas and chairs.

Here you will find the reception on the left side and the Piano Bar on the right. You can relax at a table and staff will come to you to take your drinks order. Several mojitos were consumed here!

This is a lively spot to sit on an evening with entertainment on the small stage. There is a different form of entertainment every evening at 9.30, from musicians to covers bands.

You can see what is coming up on the Inclusive app. You can download this from Google Play Store here, and the Apple App Store here. All the restaurant menus can be found there too, so it’s really useful to have!
Main Pool
In front of the hotel, there are several pools covering a large area with a pool bar and lots of sunbeds.

We loved this cute circular pool with underwater loungers.

I spotted this giant chess set which would be fun to play:

The pools are also beautiful at night.

Preferred Club Pool
Secrets Lanzarote is set out over a hill with the main hotel complex being at the top and the Preferred Club area nearest the ocean.

The Preferred Club area is where you will find the Preferred Club rooms as well as the Preferred Club pool. You can see our room to the left of the below photos and read our review here.

It’s a beautiful pool set around the pool bar. The building has a tropical feel and you could imagine yourself in the Maldives!

There are some indoor seats in the bar itself and you can order drinks, cocktails and hot drinks.

There are also slushies, peanuts and crisps available.

Around the bar are comfortable sofas, perfect for a morning coffee. There are also lots of sunbeds near the bar and around the pool itself.

The Preferred Club Pool is also beautiful at night:

Coco Cafe

Coco Cafe is a perfect spot for coffee as well as cocktails and cake.

There are lots of tables and chairs to choose from.

It’s a fabulous spot for a mid-morning coffee or you could indulge in ice cream or a milkshake.
Preferred Lounge
There is a lounge for Preferred Club guests next to the reception. This is accessed with your room key.

Inside there are sofas and chairs as well as tea and coffee making facilities and lots of soft drinks and water.

There are also sandwiches and cakes:

If you are feeling like a snack, have a look at these crisp or cute sweet cones!

The offering changes depending on the time of day too. It’s a great stop-off point if you’re feeling peckish between all the meals you can experience or you have a late flight back.
There is also a TV and books and magazines to look at.

Review of the Restaurants at Secrets Lanzarote
Oceana Lunch
We arrived at the hotel at lunch time and headed down into the Preferred Club area to have lunch at the Oceana Restaurant. There are tables inside as well as out.

Here you could order dishes like BLT, fish and chips or crispy chicken.

I ordered the Caesar salad which was delicious.

My friend ordered the ham croquettes which she enjoyed.

Portofino Dinner
On one of our evenings we ate dinner in Portofino, which is the Italian restaurant in the hotel. I have to say the restaurant itself is beautiful and it felt a very elegant affair.

There are tables inside and out but as the evening was a little cooler we sat inside.

We ordered both starters and main courses and bread was also brought and served to the table.

Cava is always offered before you even sit down, but we were also offered wine as well as regular drinks at the table.

We tried out the bruschetta:

The Gorgonzola salad:

Garlic bread with cheese:

Then for main courses we tried the gnocchi:

Lasagna with bolognese:

And diavolo pizza:

Although I love tiramisu, I just didn’t have room for dessert!
World Cafe Buffet Breakfast
The World Cafe is the buffet restaurant at Secrets in Lanzarote. There is a huge selection for every meal. We tried both the breakfast and the lunch.

For breakfast, you can choose from Full English staples such as bacon, fried eggs, and hash browns. Of course, there are also boiled eggs and poached eggs, every sort of eggs in fact!

Then there is a continental selection of meats, cheeses and salads.

Lots of different breads and pastries. As well as bread for toasting.

Even more cooked breakfast:

You could also help yourself to tea, coffees and juices, and a range of sauces!

World Cafe Buffet Lunch
We also visited the World Cafe buffet for lunch. Again, there were so many choices. What I particularly liked was the live cooking station where you could order different seafoods cooked in front of you or different meats such as chicken, pork and even ribeye steak. I am very fond of ribeye steak so this was fabulous for me. It was thin so quickly cooked and extremely tasty. (I’d eat this every day if I could!)

As well as the live cooking station. There was a large roast pork with some excellent crackling.

They were of course vegetables and various potatoes.

There were also several salads.

As well as cheeses, continental meats and bread.

And of course there were lots of small cakes and fruit for dessert.

Oceana Dinner
Oceana in the Preferred Club area serves lunch during the day and dinner in the evening as an à la carte restaurant. As the name suggests there is a variety of seafood but there are also lots of other dishes too.

Just like Portofino, there are tables inside and out and when you are greeted at the door you were automatically offered a glass of Cava.
My friend began her meal with tempura vegetables with a sweet chili sauce.

While I ordered the smoked Lanzarote cheese.

This was a dish that will live with me in memory for a long time. It was simply divine! It was served with toasted garlic bread. It was absolutely delicious. We all tried it. We all agreed!
My friend then ordered the marinated chicken with a blue cheese sauce.

While my other friend and I went for the fillet steak. This was served seared and a small barbecue was brought to the table for us to finish cooking the steak to our liking.

I did like the theatre of this and the steak was tender and delicious. A bowl of vegetables such as charred corn on the cob and potato wedges were also brought.
There was so much food we didn’t manage to try the dessert.
Portofino Breakfast
If you are a Preferred Club guest, you can eat breakfast in the Portofino restaurant. This is served a la carte and you can choose from (for example) a Full English or American breakfast with pancakes and bacon, or Eggs Benedict, etc.

There is also a small breakfast buffet where you can help yourself to toast, pastries, continental meats, cereals and cheeses.

We were seated at the table and asked what drinks we would like before our tea and coffee was brought to the table.

One of my friends ordered the Full English breakfast:

While I went for the American breakfast without any eggs (basically I like pancakes and bacon!).

There was also a wonderful assortment of pastries.

Late Check Out
Check out time is 12:00 noon. We had a late flight back so really wanted a late checkout. This was priced at €10 per hour if your room is available.
We were fortunate in that ours was and this was fabulous to be able to use the pool during the day and then get a shower before heading back to the airport.
Gohan the Sushi bar
Gohan the sushi bar is just outside the main hotel lobby as well as sushi, you can order some fabulous cocktails and sit outside on a warm evening.
Accessibility
The hotel is built on a slope leading down to the sea. This means lots of steps up and down, but there are lifts to every level. You can see the resort map here:
