The Crown Hotel is almost in the centre of the beautiful spa town of Harrogate. Dating back 300 years to the start of the Georgian period, the hotels glorious facade was bathed in sunlight on the day we visited.

Once we entered. We were directed to a large airy room at the side of the hotel. Four comfortable bucket chairs surrounded a table set for afternoon tea. We were brought iced water to begin with and the afternoon tea menu to peruse.

At £28 each it represents good value for such a lovely hotel. We were offered tea or coffee, and the teenagers had soft drinks. The finger sandwiches (with crusts cut off, naturally) were ham and tomato chutney, egg mayo and rocket, both on white bread, then smoked salmon and cream cheese as well as cheese and red onion marmalade on brown bread.

There was a large fruit scone each served warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Then finally there was a magnificent array of beautifully presented sweet treats.

My husband favoured the banoffee pie and the baked lemon cheesecake, whereas I preferred the Victoria sponge cake and the chocolate and rum delice. So, a bit like Jack Spratt and his wife, by the end, the platter was clean (actually not strictly true, but they were happy to provide a box for the leftovers!)

For an additional £6, why not push the boat out and add a glass of Prosecco? I can see some shopping in Harrogate or a visit to the Turkish baths followed by afternoon tea at the Crown Hotel being a perfect day out!

We were invited to visit and review the afternoon tea. As always all opinions are my own.
