Threadneedles Hotel London Review

Threadneedles, Autograph Collection, London Review.  Last weekend I had a fabulous weekend in London meeting up with a friend who has been living in Dubai for a couple of years, so it was so lovely to be able to catch up!  We stayed in Threadneedles, which is a five star hotel and part of the Marriott Autograph Collection.  We have made a video review of The Terrace Suite here:

Threadneedles Hotel London Review

As the name suggests, the hotel is tucked into the financial heart of London, just a stone’s throw from the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street herself – the Bank of England.

The Bank of England

The building began life as the London, City & Midland Bank in the 1800s, and it hasn’t forgotten it. There’s a sense of quiet authority in the architecture: soaring ceilings, marble columns, and that glorious stained-glass dome catching the light like a jewel above your head.

Location-wise, it’s very much a city hotel. During the week, you’ll be surrounded by the rhythm of suits, meetings, and the low hum of London’s financial engine. Come the weekend, though, the streets empty out and the whole area feels oddly peaceful, like you’ve been handed a private version of central London.  It’s just a four minute walk from Bank Tube station and a short taxi ride from Kings Cross.  If you do come by taxi though, do have a wander around the area as there are some beautiful buildings to snap a selfie in front of (and believe me there was a lot of this going on!).

Afternoon Tea at Threadneedles

During our stay we tried out the lovely afternoon tea at Threadneedles, you can see our review here.

The Bar with Gold Cocktails!

The bar in Threadneedles is very elegant with beautiful windows facing the street and glittering chandeliers. We called in before heading out to a show, to indulge in the hotel’s signature gold cocktails. The gold cocktails are of course a nod to the hotels history as a bank, particularly with it being on Threadneedle Street itself.

We tried a couple of different gold cocktails, ‘The Gilt-Edged’ which was made from Bullion rum and coffee liqueur, and ‘The Gold Standard’ made from Smirnoff Gold Vodka, apple juice, lemonade and lime with real gold flakes in it – very pretty!

They were very elegant and very strong! (note for future – do not drink on an empty stomach!)

The breakfast room is a large, airy and elegant room with lots of space between tables to feel comfortable and private.

Room 504 – The Terrace Review

We stayed in room 504 which is The Terrace and is part of a suite of rooms at the very top of the hotel. If you are a bigger party you can take more of these rooms and have them all interconnecting, but they also break down into individual suites.  We had one of the suites with a living area, king size bed and very spacious outdoor terrace.

You enter the suite into a small foyer area with a glass cabinet and mirror above.  In the glass cabinet there is a mini bar so you can bring your own bottle of wine if you like and have it chilled for later (there is even a cork screw in there!).

As you walk further into the suite there is a living area with this huge comfortable couch/bed where you can lounge and watch TV.

There are two smart TVs in the suite, one facing the bed and one facing the sofa. Both TVs are proper smart TVs and you can cast Netflix or Disney+ or your app of choice to the TV.

The living area also has a coffee table and chairs and this glorious oval desk, which might give you delusions of grandeur!

Behind the desk you will find the hospitality tray.   We were provided with Earl Grey, green and English breakfast tea as well as biscuits. There’s also a kettle and an ice bucket (for when you have taken your wine/Champers out of your mini fridge!).

There is no instant coffee because the room has its own Nespresso machine with coffee pods.

The bathroom is spacious with a shower over the bathtub. Lots of white, fluffy towels and beautiful Elemis products (I do love Elemis!)

In the bathroom you’ll find a comfortable waffle robe in addition to a second waffle robe and two pairs of slippers in the wardrobe.

The wardrobe also houses an ironing board, iron and a very snazzy looking city banker-style umbrella.

Underneath the Nespresso machine you will find a drawer with a hair dryer, clothes brushes and a sewing kit.

There are a range of current magazines such as Wallpaper, A Guide to London,  Condé Nast Traveller and Square Mile.

The bed, as I mentioned earlier, is king size, comfortable with a firm mattress and lots of pillows and cushions.

From both the living room and the bedroom you will find patio doors that lead out onto your own large private terrace (the suite is on the top floor).

This has some fabulous views over the London rooftops. I could see the dome of St. Paul’s the very tip of the Shard and a decent bit of the Walkie-Talkie.

If you don’t already know, the Walkie-Talkie has a free viewing platform – the Sky Garden with even more amazing views.  You do need to book this in advance as the tickets are as rare as hen’s teeth!

Our terrace also had a table and chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or watch the sunset over Saint Paul’s.  We visited on a gorgeous weekend, but it was April, so not the warmest.  The terrace will be an incredible spot to spend time in the summer months.

We loved our stay at Threadneedles.  It’s a lovely location, has beautiful public spaces and our room with its terrace overlooking the city was very special.  I also have to say that all of the staff we came into contact with were friendly, helpful, and eager to make our stay as pleasant as possible.
