Obviously, the British weather can’t always be trusted, so we’ve planned for all weathers and all times of day too. So, whether you’re after a full day’s worth of fun, or you’re a little pushed for time and are planning to catch up after work, we’ve got you covered.

Watch The Sunset From The City Walls

Each city has something about it that nowhere else can compare with and for York, it’s the city walls. The walls are an incredible part of York’s history, spanning almost all of the way around the city. They used to be the main protection from invaders, keeping the whole of York safe from any attack from the land below. Nowadays, they’re open to the public and make a really pretty spot for a walk. During the springtime the walls are lined with bright yellow daffodils and the occasional primrose too, making this perfect for a daytime stroll. Better still though, if you want to kick the romance up a notch, pack a picnic and perhaps a bottle of prosecco and take to the walls on a warm summer evening. The walls make a stunning spot to watch the sunset and we defy anybody not to be impressed by watching the sun go down with a glass of fizz in hand at one of this city’s most famous attractions. This date idea gets extra points for being super affordable too. The walls are completely free to visit, so your only expense is packing a picnic!

Surprise Each Other at the Shambles Market

Everybody likes to receive a gift and the Shambles Market is the perfect place to shop for all kinds of things. It’s not only one of the top things to do in York, but the perfect place for this date idea. Take to the Shambles market and give yourselves a budget with which to buy one another something. If you’d like to add a competitive element then allowing half an hour maximum can be fun. You could alternatively make this into a kind of scavenger hunt, where you need to find something old, something funny, something delicious, etc. Once you’re finished, you can compare your purchases and enjoy eating the delicious one. This market has lots of independent makers, designers, and sellers, so you’ll be spoiled for choice and be guaranteed to be able to find something totally unique to boot.

Take to the Water

romantic things to do in york

The River Ouse is a particularly pretty river that winds its way right through the center of York. Just taking a stroll down the riverbank is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, or indeed an evening, looking at the lights. However, if you want to make things a little more special, you can book a sightseeing cruise with City Cruises. This operator has a selection of cruises to choose from, each operating for at least 45 minutes and giving you a unique view of York from the water. The boats are all skippered by people who’ve lived in York a long time and know the city well. They’re happy to provide a running commentary on all of the fascinating places that you can see from the water. All of the boats have a bar on board that serves tea and coffee and a selection of cold drinks too. The snack bar is also particularly well stocked if you embark on a longer cruise and start to feel a little peckish. If you’re traveling in Winter then booking a slot inside the warm saloon is recommended, but a summer afternoon is best spent on the top deck out in the open air. You can catch the cruise from Lendal Bridge or King’s Staith, usually every hour or so, but it’s best to check online first. Those who really want to push the boat out can book on a dining cruise, where either an afternoon tea, or three-course evening meal will be served.
