Legally Blonde: The Musical is a vibrant, high-energy production by the York Light Opera Company at the York Theatre Royal that brings the beloved 2001 movie to life. We have long been Legally Blonde fans, not to mention that Mr W has a crush on Reece Witherspoon (in general but particularly in this film!). This production runs from the 13th to the 22nd of February, and we were lucky enough to attend the press night last night.
From the moment Elle Woods bursts onto the stage, you’re in for a spectacle filled with attitude, humour, and very (very!) catchy tunes.
Elle Woods is the heart of the production, played by Emma Swainston who does a really excellent and faithful rendition of Elle with her trademark stance, speech nuances and quirky mannerisms.
With music by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, the score of Legally Blonde is an earworm’s dream. Songs like “Omigod You Guys” and “So Much Better” are catchy and fun, perfectly matching the tone of the show. The only issue is that you will never get them out of your head! As we were walking back to the car park after the performance last night, you could hear so many people singing “Omigod You Guys”!
Oh and we loved Bruiser, but Rufus stole the show!
The Official bit:
“Omigod You Guys! Legally Blonde The Musical is Coming to York!”
This February York Light Opera Company are bringing the award-winning musical comedy Legally Blonde to the Main House stage at York Theatre Royal.
Join Elle Woods, a seemingly ditzy sorority girl with a heart of gold, as she tackles Harvard Law School to win back her man. Along the way Elle discovers her own strength and intelligence, proving that you can be both a beautiful blonde and brilliant.
Packed with infectious music, Legally Blonde The Musical is a fun, feel-good show with a powerful message about staying true to yourself and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for audiences of all ages. Don’t miss this opportunity to see this sassy and stylish musical live on stage.
Martyn Knight, Director said, “We are so excited to bring this empowering and hilarious show to York. Our production will celebrate Legally Blonde‘s joy and energy while highlighting its important message of self-discovery and female empowerment.”
The show will star Emma Swainston as Elle Woods, who audiences will recognise from local amateur productions of Doctor Doolittle, The Railway Children, Fiddler on the Roof and more recently as Sister Mary Leo in York Light Opera Company’s Nunsense. A cast of 34 others will be bringing the fabulous characters to life – including Zander Fick as Emmett Forrest, Emily Hardy as Paulette Bonafonte, Neil Wood as Professor Callahan, Emily Rockliff as Vivienne Kensington, Helen Miller as Enid Hoopes and Pippa Elmes as Brooke Wyndham.
Emma Swainston, who is playing Elle Woods said: “I’m thrilled to be playing Elle Woods, it’s a dream role! Growing up I watched Reese Witherspoon play Elle in the original in the film on video, on repeat… and she’s such an icon. Elle is a really inspiring character and I can’t wait to share her journey with the audience.”
A fun-filled evening for the whole family, tickets for this hilarious musical adventure are available from just £15.
