Last night we went along to the press night for SIX the musical at the Grand Opera House in York. It was a special occasion as the theatre has recently been renovated and the box office and bars are looking great!
If you don’t know, SIX is about the six wives of Henry VIII, told in a very contemporary way. Each woman tells their own story through some amazingly catchy and energetic songs. Think the Spice Girls in glittery Tudor-esque costumes! It’s as much a concert as a play with incredible lighting and sound. All the band members are women too, so it really is an empowering treat for the girls.
We hear each story in chronological order from Catherine of Aragon, and the beheading of Anne Boleyn through to the wife who survived him; Catherine Parr. Fear not that this is dusty old history though, it certainly isn’t! It’s fast paced, with cracking tunes and fabulous dancing.
It’s perfect for a girls’ night out, the humour is sharp and a little adult at times, so perhaps not for the younger ones. I took my 13 year old who loved it and (slightly worryingly) didn’t bat an eye at the more risqué comments!
The women are fantastic, and you’d love them to be your friends – at the end of the night you feel like you’ve attended just the best party ever! If you want a feelgood romp with heart then SIX the Musical is for you.
This run has been so popular it’s been sold out for weeks, but the good news is that it is returning next year from Tuesday 27 June to Sunday 2 July 2023.
