Kids! Fly a Falcon at The Robert Fuller Gallery, Thixendale

We are very lucky to live on the Yorkshire Wolds. Our house is high on a hill overlooking the Vale of York. We have fabulous views but often get snowed in over winter (I always stock up on food when winter approaches, just in case!). Not too far from us, in Thixendale, is The Robert Fuller Gallery. Robert is a local wildlife artist and sells fabulous paintings and prints in his gallery.  We visited near Christmas so had the pleasure of seeing the gallery decorated.

Eagle Eye Falconry

Now, as much as my children like to look at pictures they are more interested in doing things. So, when we were invited to attend an event called ‘Kids! Fly a Falcon’, we jumped at the chance. Danny Cameron from Eagle Eye Falconry ran the session and brought his birds to show us. The day we visited was wet and windy, so initially the day started inside.

Danny showed us several birds during the session, discussing their habitats and nature. He was approachable and clearly passionate about his subject. He spoke to the children present and encouraged them to ask questions.

It was a small group and great for the children to feel comfortable and confident enough to approach the birds. It helped that Danny’s ten year old son, JD was there to help his Dad and to talk about his own bird.

Later, when there was a break in the weather, we headed outside to see the birds fly.

What struck me most about the event was the clear bond Danny has with his birds. We loved hearing about them and Miss H loved seeing and getting up close to them.

It’s a really fab event to take the children to, it’s a beautiful location and the gallery is lovely to walk around and browse (there are pictures, cards, calendars etc to buy).  A real treat were the wildlife cameras showing both live feeds of animal habitats and previously recorded close up footage of tawny owls, kestrels and weasels.

Danny also exhibits his birds at shows, indeed we saw him earlier this year at Burnby Hall Gardens. His website is Eagle Eye Falconry and he can be found on Facebook here.
