Dick Whittington Rock n’ Roll Panto at City Variety Leeds

It’s that time of the year again. The time where I spend far too much time thinking that I would make the perfect panto dame!

Oh yes I would!

Last week, we took our annual trip to City Varieties in Leeds to check out this years Rock n’ Roll panto offering – Dick Whittington.
Rock n’ Roll panto has a hardcore following of people who attend every year, but for those not in the know Rock n’ Roll Panto is an eclectic blend of traditional panto, classic rock and party anthems. You can expect dad jokes, audience participation, a possible soaking, a sing-along and (most importantly) an evening of fun. You can also expect a lot of double entendre and Dick Whittington definitely lends itself to a LOT of these. I’m not going to lie, I spent the whole evening sniggering like a child.

As ever, the ensemble of incredibly talented actor-musicians were completely fantastic. Ben Mabberley played Dick wonderfully, Rock n’ Roll panto stalwart, Kenny Davies, thoroughly entertains as Alderman Fitzwarren and Simon Nock stepping up as the dame for the fifth year in a row was as wonderful (and possibly ruder) as ever. OH YES HE WAS.
I was at ‘barely able to breathe with laughter’ at the ‘succession’ line…

I was a little concerned that my current wardrobe of tartan trousers and black top tied me in with King Rat and his cronies too much but to be honest, they had the best songs in the show so…all the cool kids are wearing tartan!

Dick Whittington will be running at City Varieties  from now until Sunday 8th January 2023. The running time for the show is 2 hours 30 mins (plus a 20 minute interval) and tickets start at £17.50 available from the City Varieties website
