The Yorkshire Tour de Phantome – Ghostly Tours!

The Yorkshire Tour de Phantome.  If you like treasure hunts and self guided tours then this is one for you.  I have been sent the below information about spooky tours around the Yorkshire Coast.  Perfect for Halloween or any time really.  I love a good ghost story at Christmas (thank you Mr Dickens!).

The phantasmagorical heritage of the Yorkshire Coast and North York Moors National Park is set to attract even more visitors to the region this autumn with the launch of a new series of paranormal-themed visits and tours – the Tour de Phantome.

A team of researchers has been searching out the spookiest stories in the country to create a new online resource that adds a spiritual theme to visits to the region, highlighting the reputedly most haunted venues from Whitby to Pickering with suggested routes for intrepid paranormal hunters by car, on foot, bicycle, horseback and even steam train.

Yorkshire Tour de Phantome

“If you are looking for a spiritual adventure, then the autumn months – once the throngs of summer tourists have gone, and the fields have been harvested – are one of the best times to explore the other-worldly side of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast,” comments Welcome to Yorkshire’s Janet Deacon.  “An incredible array of folklore enables you to walk in the footsteps of saints and sinners, and discover for yourself the truth in the myriad stories of witches, hobgoblins, sprites and spirits that are anchored in local legend.”

For the bravest – and most hardy – explorers, there are five eerie étapes (stages) within the Yorkshire Tour de Phantome:

  • A Yorkshire Coast rollercoaster between Whitby & Ravenscar
  • Off the beaten track in the North York Moors National Park
  • A Land of Legends on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the Ryedale Market Town of Pickering
  • Soulful Spooks from the Ryedale Market Town of Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey
  • Fiendish Filey: a baffling beach walk with sea-dragons, spectres and shipwreck graveyards.

Each route has been designed to take in some of the most picturesque views in Yorkshire along the way, with regular stopping points at venues with legendary paranormal connections.  “Sadly, we cannot guarantee that every visitor will have an other-worldly experience whilst following the trails, but with this part of the world gaining an international reputation for its microbreweries and gin – many taking inspiration from local legends – there’s no reason why our adult visitor can’t relax with a glass of locally-produced spirits at the end of a day’s ghosthunting!” adds Janet.
