Unusual Ways to Clean Your Carpets at Home

Unusual Ways to Clean Your Carpets at Home

Besides the popular methods for carpet cleaning with detergents, bought from the store, there are many other useful cleaning techniques, which you can try. In this article, we have collected the most unusual and yet quite effective ones.

You can use homemade sourdough cabbage that doesn’t have vinegar. Cabbage, slightly dried from brine, is scattered over the carpet, debris and dirt adhere to the cabbage particles. You can repeat this unusual domestic carpet cleaning procedure by collecting and rinsing the cabbage. You can leave the cabbage to dry on the carpet, then you can vacuum it later. Many people consider this method effective, despite the external extravagance.

Another interesting carpet cleaning method is to clean the carpet with tea leaves. This method for cleaning is suitable only for dark coloured carpets. In this case, the wet tea tree leaves are spread over the entire surface of the carpet and allowed to dry. Tea gives a pleasant scent and removes dirt, but in the case of a light carpet it can leave tea-coloured stains. For this type of cleaning, it is not necessary to brew fresh tea, you can use what is left after tea drinking.

How to Freshen Carpets with a Solution of Ammonia, Salt and Citric Acid

These products do not remove stubborn stains, but they give the carpets freshness and brighten the colours. They should be used once every six months or a year. Choose your best option:

Dilute 2 tbsp.  ammonia in a litre of cold water.

Dissolve 2 tbsp. citric acid and 1 tbsp. salt in a litre of water.

Any of these solutions are used to clean the carpet with a brush. Then the remnants of the funds are removed from the pile with dry napkins or sponges. The carpet is dried. Do not forget that ammonia has a very pungent smell, so both the cleaned carpet product and the room will have to be well ventilated.

Deep Carpet Cleaning with Laundry Soap

This is a more complicated recipe, but it removes even old grease stains and stubborn dirt:

  • Rub the laundry soap with a fine grater.
  • Take a tablespoon of these shavings and dissolve them completely in 1 litre of warm water.
  • Add one tablespoon turpentine to the solution.
  • Apply the resulting product to the surface of the carpet. Rub lightly with a brush to better penetrate the solution into the pile.
  • Wait 3-5 minutes.
  • Wipe the entire surface of the carpet with a cloth dampened in clean water.
  • Wait another 5-10 minutes.
  • Wipe the carpet again with a damp cloth and then dry.
  • Air and dry the product.

How to Make Universal Stain Remover?

A universal stain remover is done as follows: 3 teaspoons of dishwashing liquid, a quarter of a glass of vinegar and ammonia are dissolved in 7-8 litres warm water. You can remove the stain with a sponge or cloth, and then clean it with a washing vacuum cleaner.

General Rules for the Use of Homemade Cleaning Methods

Whichever carpet cleaning recipe you choose, be sure to keep the following in mind:

It is not recommended to scrub carpets with a hard brush, as this can damage the fibres. Any cleaning with a brush or broom is done only in the direction of the pile, not against or across it.

Also, carpets should not be treated with hot water. This is especially true for natural products – woollen and silk.

Be careful not to overwet the rug while cleaning. Drying too slowly may give it a musty odour.

Before treating the entire carpet with any product, be sure to try its effect on a small area in an inconspicuous place. Without knowing the composition of the fibres, it is impossible to predict how they will react to cleaning. Paint may wash out, stain may appear, pile deteriorate, etc.

After cleaning the carpet, carefully remove the cleaning agent from it. After all, its residues can make the pile sticky, wet and lead to accelerated subsequent pollution.

We hope we have helped you find the right cleaning method for you. However, do not underestimate the importance of professional carpet cleaning procedures. Steam carpet cleaning has to be done once on every 6-12 months in order to extend the life of your flooring. However, keep in mind that carpet steam cleaning can be used only for specific types of carpets. Consult with experts which method for carpet maintenance is the most appropriate for your carpet!
