Sumo Flemingate, Pan Asian Restaurant in Beverley – Review

Sumo Flemingate, Pan Asian Restaurant in Beverley – Sumo is a pan Asian restaurant and takeaway in Flemingate, Beverley. It’s tucked away around the corner from the cinema so it could be easy to miss – but it would be a shame if you did.  It’s small and intimate inside.  There are just four tables, but also casual high seating around a bar with a view into the kitchen.  I can’t do those high stools, my legs always dangle and I end up with pins and needles, so I was thankful for the table!  There is a nice cosy feel to the restaurant, decorated as it is with glowing red Chinese lanterns.  There are lots of Japanese choices on the menu.  I’ve always wanted to visit Japan and hope to go soon.

We sampled three (quite frankly delicious) starters.  The first of which and my personal favourite were this salt and pepper chicken wings.

Then we tried the chicken satay which was lovely and saucy, sprinkled with crushed peanuts.

The last starter we tried were these salt and pepper ribs (fabulous – I didn’t eat the chilli!).  For a taste of the orient at home, try this great Chinese belly pork recipe.

My guest ordered the salmon bento box for her main course.  It came with prawn toast, rice, salad and a chilli dipping sauce.

My main course was quite theatrical, I ordered the Chicken Teppenyaki. First a hot plate was brought and then chicken was added which created a marvellous sizzle.

After a little while beansprouts and broccoli were added.

Followed by an assortment of tasty sauces, spring onion and a sprinkling of something crunchy.

I have no idea what the crunchy topping was and should have asked. I am here to tell you that it was magnificent though! There was definitely garlic, maybe nuts, and a lovely citrussy flavour came through too. I also loved the sweet sauce that became sticky on the flat hot plate, make sure you use your chicken to hoover that up!

Definitely give Sumo a go. It’s small, but it’s cosy and the food was amazing. If I lived closer I would be in there an awful lot as well as getting takeaway!

Sumo invited us to review, but as ever, all opinions expressed are my own.
