Children’s Theatre at The Pocklington Arts Centre

Throughout the year, mainly during school holidays the Pocklington Arts Centre stages plays for children. The venue itself is not huge and so has a much friendlier, more intimate feel.

Children are welcomed and usually have a good view from wherever they sit. If you book early you can often get front row seats which is practically on the stage! This is better for more confident children, though more shy children and husbands (definitely mine!) may feel a little intimidated.  We saw a lovely production of ‘Santa in Love’ there last December and afterwards had a great opportunity to meet the man himself on stage. It was a perfect addition to our Christmas festivities.  In February we saw a production of ‘The Snow Bear’, a creative mix of storytelling, songs and puppetry – with a little magic thrown in.

It’s very reasonably priced at around £6 per person. Much more purse friendly than the bigger theatres in York. They sell sweets and drinks in the foyer, but have a lovely ice cream parlour next door which is a smashing treat for afterwards (and a good incentive/threat to encourage good behaviour during!).

They have recently completed a new £540,000 refurbishment. The upstairs area is now a very comfortable café and bar. I recently visited to see a comedian there (Mark Watson, very funny, talked about his young family in his routine) and was really impressed with the new look.

Car parking spaces are a bit like hen’s teeth in Pocklington but I find a couple of circuits round the town and you tend to get lucky. Parking is free in the town for two hours too.  Pocklington Arts Centre also screens current films, and has live music and stand-up comedy so do check their website: http://www.pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk/
