The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough – Review

The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough Review – Our first impressions of The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough were very positive, it’s a beautiful big white wedding cake of a building and the views of the sea are amazing.

The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough – Review

Strolling up to the desk to check in, we received a proper warm Yorkshire welcome. Everything was explained and nothing was too much trouble.  Looking at the reviews on Facebook this seems a common theme, how welcoming the staff are (have a look and you’ll see what I mean).  We parked outside the hotel and they gave us a parking pass for the time we were there so we could park in any of the surrounding streets.  It can be busy, but a couple of circuits got us a parking space right under our window both times.

The Family Room at The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough

We took the lift up to our room and were similarly impressed. The main room is spacious with a large super-king bed, two chairs, dressing table and chest of drawers.

There is also a well stocked hospitality tray with a cafetiere. Above the chest of drawers is an LCD TV.

Through a door is the attached kids room with two single beds, two chest of drawers and their own LCD TV in the wall (the decadence!).

There were two large sash windows in our room and one in the children’s room.  Each was fitted with a safety catch so they could not be opened more than about four inches – certainly no children could escape that way!

The bathroom is large and can be lit normally or with purple mood lighting. The bath is large with a central shower head above it.

The views from The Crown Spa Hotel

It’s a lovely room, but it’s made stunning by the large sash windows and incredible sea views, and we are not talking a little peek at the sea between other buildings either. This is full on, stretching for miles sea view gloriousness! I think you do pay extra for the seaview, but it’s so worth it.  The seaview rooms face almost due East so if you are the romantic type (or have a baby and are therefore awake anyway!) Then you could wake to watch the sunrise over the sea.  This picture was taken from our window on our second day there when we had some fabulous sunshine!

Dinner at the Taste Restaurant

Dinner is served in the Taste restaurant. If you are on a dinner bed and breakfast tariff you can have the three course set menu, or have a budget of £26 to spend on the regular menu. We chose to do this. The menu is large and covers modern British dishes, as well as tapas, pizza and pasta.

To start, I chose the Welsh rarebit starter:

Mr Wonders went for the Tempura King Prawns:

Miss H loved the tomato soup:

And Master T plumped for the garlic bread, which was huge and delicious (I pinched a bit!)

The following evening I chose the salt cured beetroot and feta cheese:

For our main courses, I chose the tagliatelle carbonara on our first night:

And the sirloin steak the following night (served perfectly medium as requested):

Mr Wonders went for the same both evenings, this spectacular Double Crown Burger that he has been mentioning ever since!:

Master T went for a pizza:

While Miss H wanted a tomato and cheese pasta that wasn’t on the menu, but they very kindly made up for her exactly as requested:

Finally, for dessert the children chose Blueberry muffin sundaes:

Mr Wonders chose the Eton Mess Sundae:

And I, as the family cheese lover chose the cheese board, consisting of mainly local cheeses:

There seems to be lots of comfortable seating areas within the hotel and the bar area had a pleasing buzz to it where people were clearly relaxed and happy. I also passed another lounge with a huge TV on the wall down the corridor you use to find the loos, so don’t miss that if you are looking for somewhere to relax.

Cooked and Continental Breakfast

The next morning saw us back in the restaurant for breakfast. We were given a choice of tables and then handed a menu. You could choose either cooked or continental breakfast. We chose cooked and Mr Wonders and I went for the full English (without tomato or mushroom on mine because I am funny like that!).

Master T went for pancakes with a berry compote while Miss H went for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. All was excellent.

As well as the cooked part of the breakfast we could help ourselves to the continental buffet that included cereal, fresh bread, toast, yoghurt, ham and cheese and fruit. We were also offered tea or coffee at the table and could help ourselves to apple or orange juice. I love breakfast in a hotel, it’s one of my favourite parts of the stay.

The hotel benefits from a swimming pool and spa area. The children are allowed in the pool between 7:30-10:30 and 15:00-18:00 on a Monday to Friday, and 8:00-10:30 and 15:00-18:00 on a Saturday and Sunday. They are not allowed in the spa area of course, but if you can manage to sneak off without them for half an hour, you will find there is a large jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and ice cave to indulge in. The lockers don’t need a pound and towels are provided.  Oh and there is also a large gym that I studiously ignored.

There are lots of things to do in Scarborough.  We visited Alpamare, a large indoor and outdoor waterpark on the Saturday and Sealife Scarborough on the Sunday, but plan to return as Scarborough offers so much more.

All in all, we had a marvellous weekend in Scarborough.  The room was lovely, the bed was huge and the views were amazing.  The food was excellent and all the staff we came into contact with were courteous and friendly.  I’d thoroughly recommend it as a place to stay.

  1. I love Scarborough, we visit every summer but only for the day but we really should stay overnight. This hotel looks great, the meals and breakfast all look delicious and the rooms look comfortable. I might look into booking here for my sons birthday as we normally visit somewhere for the weekend x

  2. This hotel looks lovely. I especially love the room set up. Perfect for families. The food looks wonderful, especially the breakfast. That was nice that they made your daughter something which wasn’t on the menu
