Eating Thai at Busaba in Covent Garden, London

Yesterday I had a rare day out without the kids at Busaba, Covent Garden (they were at school anyway, so they barely missed me and Mr Wonders made them egg and chips for tea, so it was all good).  I took the train down to London with my friend, Vikki, to see a musical (Kinky Boots – such fun!).

Lunch at Busaba Eathai in Covent Garden

For lunch we headed over to Covent Garden and tried Busaba, a great little Thai restaurant on Floral Street.  Inside the restaurant, it’s very cosy, with dark wood tables and low, atmospheric lighting.  The tables are large and square and great for a large party, but otherwise are considered communal.

Cosy Atmosphere

Our server was friendly and took our order and I explained that we didn’t have much time as we were heading to a show.  She told me we would be fine (and she was right).  To begin with we ordered the Wok Tossed Cashews.  These were cooked with chili and fried shallot.  They were fab and if I could have, I would have bagged what we didn’t eat to take to the theatre with us – they were delicious.

Fragrant Fried Chicken – Thai style!

Next I ordered the Fragrant Fried Chicken from the small plate menu.  Think chicken goujons here, but the most flavoursome chicken goujons you have ever had, with a Thai twist.  Then you get to dip them in a spicy chili and lemongrass concoction – it was honestly divine.

Vikki ordered the Thai calamari with ginger and green peppercorn.  She seemed to enjoy it, though I didn’t try it because – urgh, calamari!

Thai Char-grill

I chose the Green Curry Grilled Chicken for my main course.  I love green curry anyway, but this was really different.  It was from the Busaba char-grill menu and it really gave an extra element to the dish.  The char-grilled flavour came through and really complimented the light curry sauce.  The rice came with a lovely coating of the sauce too.  Flavoursome and not too spicy – perfect.

Pad Thai with King Prawns

For her main course Vikki ordered the Pad Thai with king prawns.  She said it was delicious and it certainly looked it.  Again, I am not a seafood fan so didn’t share.  Next time, I shall take a friend with similar tastes so that I can steal their food.

Children’s menu

Busaba has some great offers on too, like the Bangkok express lunch at £9 which I think is great, especially for Covent Garden.  (London prices are so much more than my native Yorkshire!).  They also do a cracking kids’ meal deal at £5.90 for a snack, main course and drink.

The Loos

Now, I don’t always talk about the loos when reviewing a restaurant but I thought the signs on the Loo doors needed a special mention.  Can you work out which is which?

There are several Busaba in central London, as well as restaurants as far afield as Liverpool and Manchester too.

Busaba invited us to dine but all the opinions – as ever – are my own.

Pin me for later!
