Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge

Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge

I was invited to take part in a Travel Bloggers look back at the places we have visited this year and think about where we would like to go in the future. The end of the year is always a time when I become reflective and I thought this was a lovely idea.

  1. If you had to move to a country that you’ve NEVER been to, and live there for ten years, where would you go?

I think I would prefer to choose an English speaking country. I’ve lived in America and visited Australia but have never been to Canada. It looks so wild and free there, the space really appeals. My Gran lived in Canada as a child so it has always held a special place in my heart, plus I want to visit Prince Edward Island as a homage to Anne of Green Gables!

  1. If you had to live in a hotel for the rest of your life, which hotel would you choose and why?

This is a hard one for me as I have stayed in some fabulous hotels in the past. One that really stuck in my memory was the Shangri-La in Singapore. It was a beautiful hotel and the rooms were large and luxurious. The main thing I recall it fondly for though was the hotel ‘happy hour’ in truth a two hour reception in the early evening where canapes were served and the Champagne was free and abundant!

  1. If you could only eat the cuisine of one nationality forever more, which would you choose?

I have never been to Thailand and would love to visit. A large part of this is because I love Thai food. The striking flavourings of coconut, lemongrass, and galangal with a spicy bite of chili are an exotic and heady mix.  Here is a picture from Chaophraya in Leeds (it’s lovely if you every get chance to go!).

  1. Who has given you ‘holiday envy’ this year, and how?

Some friends of ours took their children on one of the Disney Cruise ships. I am very envious of this as it is something I would love to do with my family. However, we also love to visit DisneyWorld in Florida and the two are a very similar price – so DisneyWorld wins. Would still love to cruise with Disney though!

  1. If you had to look at the same sunrise or the same sunset every day, where in the world would you never get bored of seeing?

We visit Stoupa in the Peloponnese in Greece every year and I love to plan our family meal on the balcony to coincide with the sun going down across the bay. If we are fortunate enough to have child care that night, a cocktail in a beachside taverna watching the same sunset is also a tolerable substitute!

  1. If you were taking a ‘staycation’ in your home town, where would it be and what would you recommend others to do?

I come from a beautiful historic city – York in North of England. There is so much to see and do here from seeing the majesty of York Minster to visiting our fabulous museums (I’d recommend the Castle Museum). Take a wander around the Bar Walls – ancient stone walls that were once part of the city’s defences. Parts of the original Roman walls still stand built almost 2000 years ago. We have lots of family attractions from the York’s Chocolate Story to York Maze.  The below picture was taken in the York Minster.  Miss H has binoculars and Master T has a magnifying glass – I was lucky to catch the moment.

  1. Describe your perfect travel day of the year?

We have had some fabulous holidays and some amazing days out this year. One of my favourites was a lovely day glamping at the North Star Club in Sancton, East Yorkshire. We spent a lovely family day on the beach and then returned to our woodland lodge to play Monopoly while Mr Wonders cooked on the barbecue (and Mr Wonders cooks a mean barbecue!)

  1. What have you ticked off your bucket list in 2016?

On my family travel bucket list was taking the kids on a cruise which we did in May 2016. We cruised with the Emerald Princess from Southampton around Spain and France. I have written about the fab time we had and how much the kids enjoyed the kids clubs onboard, not to mention the buffets!

  1. What is top of your travel bucket list for 2017?

We have lots of fabulous trips planned for 2017, but the one the kids are most excited about is our upcoming trip to DisneyWorld in Florida in May. We are staying at Old Key West and are trying Disney Dining for the first time, so there is great excitement in our house!

  1. Share your favourite Instagram photo of 2016?

I like this one for the tall trees and the blue sky. It was taken during our lovely autumnal stay at Jollydays glamping site near York

  • Great answers to the Travel Whispers questions 🙂

I have read so many historical fiction novels based in the UK and York seems to feature in a lot of them. One day I absolutely have to get there to visit.

  • I’ve always wanted to to go to York. In reality it’s not that far away from glasgow, but it feels FAR! ha. I will maybe spend a wee weekend there soon and explore 🙂

    • I once visited Oban and drove up through Glasgow. It did seem an awfully long way! I’d advise the train – we are only 2 hours from Edinburgh on the train (though I admit I have no idea how long the train journey from Glasgow to Edinburgh is!). I do know that when they have a sale on you can get train tickets as cheap as £10 return from Edinburgh to York though – so keep an eye on that!

  • I love reading these posts! It’s so interesting to hear other bloggers experiences etc – I also chose a hotel in Singapore! They do have some fantastic ones!

York is a fantastic city – about time I paid it another visit! Added to my weekend trips list for 2017! 😊

    • I really loved Singapore and would love to return. Trying to persuade hubby that Australia would be a good idea, so we can maybe stop off on the way.

York is fabulous – definitely plan a weekend here!
