Games and Good Food at Joe’s Kitchen, York

Joe’s Kitchen is a modern family friendly restaurant, newly opened on Coney Street in York. It is right next to the Mansion House where Cafe Rouge used to be.

Light and Airy Decoration

It’s a lovely light and airy restaurant with plenty of nooks and crannies to squirrel your family away in. The decor is comfortable and eclectic with books and vintage signs adorning the walls. I felt it was contemporary and fresh and similar in style to Bill’s situated not far away on Coney Street.

Games for the Kids

There’s a large bookcase that houses lots of toys and games to keep the kids amused, which is an excellent and welcome touch. My two played ‘Guess Who’, and had fun with a chalk board. I also saw Connect 4, Junior Pictionary and Jenga. Not sure about the sensibleness of Jenga though, think I’d be having nightmares about that for weeks after!!

Kids’ Menu

There is a kids’ menu. You can choose a main, a drink and a pudding for £6.45, which I think is excellent value. Miss H chose sausage and mash, which came with its own little jug of gravy.

Master T went for the ‘build your own burger’. You get two burgers, salad and chips. It’s a big portion so Mr Wonders got lucky and hoovered up the second burger when Master T failed to eat them both.

Grown Ups’ Menu!

I ordered the chicken skewers. They were served with nice chunky chips, flat bread and a good sized pot of tzatziki. We visit Greece every year and it was like being on holiday!

Mr Wonders ordered the Gourmet Burger. He is quite an expert when it comes to burgers so you can trust his judgement when he recommends one, which he did. He also complimented the aforementioned chunky chips.

Staff and Service

We visited the restaurant before it’s official opening.  The staff and service were so slick you wouldn’t know it was new. The staff were jolly and smiling and the children got lots of attention which made for happy children (and by extension happy parents).

To Sum Up….

Take the kids, you’ll have a lovely relaxing time as the kids will love it too. We visited at lunchtime but I would also like to see it on an evening as I imagine it would make a good setting for a laid back girls’ night out.

This is Miss H with her chalkboard (it says ‘I Love Joe’s Kitchen’).

  1. The food looks yummy! I love q good family friendly eatery. Makes eating out with the little ones that little bit less stressful – and you feel welcome and not a nuisance xx
